Your trimester plan

What happens, and when

A typical low-risk pregnancy with us. If you need closer monitoring, your doctor will add visits and explain exactly why.

  1. Weeks 6 - 12

    Booking visit and dating scan

A long first appointment covering your history and blood pressure, booking blood tests including genotype, blood group, HIV and hepatitis B, and an early scan to confirm your dates.

  2. Weeks 13 - 20

    Settling in

Monthly visits with your midwife. We talk through nausea, nutrition, work and travel, and begin malaria prevention in pregnancy as recommended in Nigeria.

  3. Weeks 20 - 28

    Anomaly scan and glucose test

A detailed scan of your baby's growth and anatomy at around 20 weeks, and a glucose test between 24 and 28 weeks to check for diabetes in pregnancy.

  4. Weeks 28 - 36

    A closer watch

Visits every two weeks to check your baby's growth and position and your blood pressure. You begin noticing movements daily, and we write your birth plan together.

  5. Week 36 onwards

Birth and the first six weeks

Weekly visits until labour, then birth in our suite with your midwife. She visits you at home in the first week, and we see you and your baby together at six weeks.

Questions

What mothers often ask us

When should I book my first visit?

Ideally between 6 and 10 weeks, or as soon as you have a positive test. If you are further along, please still come; it is never too late to begin antenatal care.

Can my husband or partner come to appointments?

Yes, and to scans too. Every woman is also offered a few private minutes alone with her midwife at each visit, should she want them.

Do you deliver babies here?

Yes. Low-risk births take place in our two-room birth suite, and our theatre is ready for caesarean births, with an obstetrician and an anaesthetist on call through the night.

What if my pregnancy is considered high risk?

Twins, high blood pressure, diabetes or a previous caesarean do not rule you out. Your consultant plans extra visits and scans, and refers you to a teaching hospital such as UNTH if specialist newborn care may be needed.

Can I use my HMO?

We see members of Hygeia HMO, AXA Mansard Health, Reliance HMO, Leadway Health and others. Send your plan details on WhatsApp and we will confirm your cover before your booking visit.

What should I bring to my booking visit?

Any earlier scan reports, your genotype result if you have one, a list of medicines you take and your HMO card. There is no need to fast.
